Clearing the Area
First, you’ll want to clear the area of any trees, flowers, weeds, items, and furniture, making as much space as you want for your cliffs.
Once the area is clear, open up the Island Designer app and select the Cliff-Construction Permit to start building. If you’re new to terraforming, check out this post that covers the whole process.
Building the Cliffs
To start, you need to build a base cliff layer on either side of the entrance. The length of the entry path and size of the cliffs are up to you. I went with a shorter path because I have houses nearby.
If you’ll be using inclines, then you’ll want to plan out their locations while you’re building. I just dug some holes to mark where I wanted my incline to go.
Then you can get to work on the upper layer of cliffs. I chose to make mine smaller and more decorative than functional, but you could build a bigger second level of cliffs if you really wanted to hide the rest of your island.
After building the cliffs, I added waterfalls and streams to break up the cliff faces.
When placing inclines, you want to be facing the direction you want them to go, either vertical or horizontal. Inclines take up two by three spaces on the bottom level and two by one spaces on the top.
The next day, I finished up waterscaping after the incline was built and Katt’s house had been moved. You can’t waterscape too close to villager houses, so I had to pay 50,000 Bells to move her house out of the way.
Decorating the Cliffs
Once that was all done, I started decorating. I had no real plan or theme, so I just used the trees and flowers I’d dug up earlier along with a couple furniture items I had in storage.
I also used a custom path to mark the entrance and give it a worn stone look.
Finished Entrance
After adding a few more flowers and weeds, I deemed it done enough, so here’s what the finished entrance looks like!
